motorola i290 setup
Hi Everyone,
I am excited to find out this application and want to test it out with my new boost umlimited plan. I download JAD from Motorola website as howto said. Install the driver under xp. Plug in the data cable and see is recognized as modem. I follow the direction and load the GPStracker.jad. After that I use Menu->more->more and see a GPS. Select that and see 3 options: ( Position, Privacy, Interface)
My questions:
1) How do I enter the device id?
2) How to configure it so it is auto run when the phone powerup?
Thanks for your help,
Jonathan

Re: motorola i290 setup
I just bought a i290, and I have to admit, I don't know what the hell I am doing...
How to I get the app installed on the phone?
Is yours working?
I need a step by step instruction for this. the HOWTO section didn't help me...
I hope someone answers this.

Re: motorola i290 setup
You download the program to your computer. Then hook up the data cable between your computer and phone. When you run the program it will load onto your phone.

Re: motorola i290 setup
Ok, I have a UBS cable I have it hooked up, but dont I need a driver for the i290? I DLed what I THOUGHT I needed from the motorola webpage, but no dice, it says my device is not supported...
Milan, you're saying that I just run the program from my computer and it installs on the phone when the cable is hooked up? What program? you mean the .jad file? My computer doesn't recognize what program to use when I open it...
Is that wrong?

Re: motorola i290 setup
-Try uninstalling the usb drivers and unplug the usb cable.
-Then download and install this driver
http://servicemyphone.motorola.com/iden … _2.8.0.zip
-Then install this app to transfer your JAD file
http://idenphones.motorola.com/iden/sup … tility.exe
-Plug in your usb cable and connect it to your phone.
You should be able to use "download apps utility" to push the GPSTracker.JAD to your phone.
(Yes it's normal for windows for not recognizing the file format don't bother opening it it's a special Java package)

Re: motorola i290 setup
when I launch the iDEN Download Apps Utility, it reads:
"ERROR -5, Phone Model is not supported. Please contact cutsomer care"
gonna reboot and try this sequence. Plug in cable, plug in phone, launch Apps DL Utility.
Any other suggestions?
Did this work on your Boost Mobile, i290?

Re: motorola i290 setup
Will just any USB cable (like for a digital camera) with the mini USB end and the regular size on the other end, work? That's what I have been trying.

Re: motorola i290 setup
Oh yeah, got some magic happening. I think I will create a Google site for this with detailed instructions for the i290. Screen shots and all...
for the "less than savy" people such as myself.
more to come, going outside (where I get signal) and am going to start the app if possible.

Re: motorola i290 setup
These instructions and links didn't work for me, they are outdated...
-Try uninstalling the usb drivers and unplug the usb cable.
-Then download and install this driver
http://servicemyphone.motorola.com/iden … _2.8.0.zip
-Then install this app to transfer your JAD file
http://idenphones.motorola.com/iden/sup … tility.exe
-Plug in your usb cable and connect it to your phone.
WHAT DID WORK FOR A BOOST MOBILE PAY AS YOU GO, MOTOROLA i290 :
DL the zip file that contains the .JAL and the .JAD from instamapper here-->
http://www.instamapper.com/download/GPSTracker.zip
Save it to your desktop.
You will only need the .JAD file, I will tell you why in a minute...
Then you will have to login and create a free account with MOTODEV here-->
http://developer.motorola.com/log-in/
and use this link to DL the latest and greater iDEN Java Application loader, once you have created an account (and get the confirmation email)
use this link once you have an account...
--> http://developer.motorola.com/docstools … 01.08.zip/
Install the software and when done, launch from the icon on your desktop.
once the iDEN Java Application Loader is open, connect the USB cable to the computer, (I used the one from a digtal camera with a mini USB--for the phone-- on one end and a regular USB--for the PC--on the other end) then plug in the phone and wait for your hardware wizard to detect the phone, take a few seconds.
Then, on the iDEN Java Application Loader, click the "Connect to Phone" in the top left corner of the window. It will start querying the phone and it's apps that are installed, and populate a list of them...
Once that is done, click the "Download" command button. It will ask you to locate the file (this is where you will find it on your desktop in the zipped folder), select the .jad file called GPS Tracker.jad
Click ok, or apply...
Now, in the iDEN Java Application Loader screen you will see in the right portion of the window, a column named "Recently Loaded Files", highlight it and click the "Download Selected" command button.
Now that we have the app uploaded to the phone, disconnect the phone and find a place that you have a clear view of the sky, open your apps and find the one called "GPS Tracker"
Next, with you Device Key from instapper on hand, enter it (13 digit number), then double check for accuracy, select how often you want it to locate and send, save, and you should be in business.
Get yourself to your computer and Login to instamapper and there you have it.
Hope this helps...let me know!

We have found a lot of outdated information on this site
I suspect it's because they are working on making the app better, which is a good thing, still, one good day of going through the 'How To" pages would take care of all the old info.
THANKS Dans1 for taking the time to update the instructions for everyone ![]()

Re: motorola i290 setup
Glad to be of help, like I said, I think I will make some truly step-by-step instructions and post them on google.sites, when I have them done, I will send a link on this forum somewhere, somewhere VERY visable. this is so cool.
Next is on to the hardwiring experiment, parts should be delivered soon.

Re: motorola i290 setup
Dans1 I got another phone and tried your instructions. For some reason they do not work. When you get to this part:
" click the "Download" command button. It will ask you to locate the file (this is where you will find it on your desktop in the zipped folder), select the .jad file called GPS Tracker.jad
Click ok, or apply..."
We get this error:
Since all file names are the default ones that you get when you download everything, the file names should not be wrong. I will see if I can find out why this error is occurring so we can include them in the instructions. Hopefully I'll be able to 'track' it down (pun intended) ![]()

Re: motorola i290 setup
My mistake, I simply forgot to unzip the Tracker file ![]()
Everything works fine. I am going to test it against Mologogo and see which tracker works best for my application. I think InstaMapper is probably easier to use, but Mologogo seems to have more features. It's 6 of one, and a half dozen of another ![]()

Re: motorola i290 setup
So you got the app on your phone? up and running! Excellent! are you using the i290 as well?
I have a new problem, I was experimenting on the way to work. And, although I have heard on other forums that the app continues to run in the background even after you "exit" the app on the phone. I found this to NOT be true. Does anyone have a solution to this?
I exited GPS Tracker mid-way to work this morning...checked the map on Instamapper when I got in and sure enough, the data stopped precisely where I exited to app.
Any thoughts?
Cheers!

Yes it appears to be up and running. We have the i335, it's a little nicer, built to military spec, and cost less. I did not sign up for the web but I did sign up for auto-reboost (at the 10.00 level) so that the phone is always working.

Interesting. I will check this sometime this week also and see what happens. As I understand it, once you turn the app on it's supposed to run in the background, even if you turn the phone off.

Re: motorola i290 setup
After reading all the helpful hints, thanks by the way, I'm still having problems loading this to my daughter's i290. The message is reading "an error occurred trying to read from the file selected for download" Any suggestions out there? Does the phone have to have the web for this to accept the download?

No, I can't get it to download onto the phone. I can get to this... "Then, on the iDEN Java Application Loader, click the "Connect to Phone" in the top left corner of the window. It will start querying the phone and it's apps that are installed, and populate a list of them...

Oh I think that's what happened to me the first time I tried it. As I recall it had something to do with the zip file not being opened correctly.
