We would love to, but Apple does not allow 3rd party apps to run in the background.

Re: iPhone 3G Application - Switching Tracking Off
is there a way to enable the program to run in the background to constantly monitor location? if so, since apple does not approve. email me at bfd1724@yahoo.com.
thanks

Re: iPhone 3G Application - Switching Tracking Off
Apple has completely disabled the ability to do this, you can't do it even if you want to (and even if you found a way to, apple would pull it from the App store), the API apple has created simply shuts down the program when you go to another one. So the answer to these questions is simply...
No, the application can NOT track when you do not have the application running, nor can it be made to do so.
I have no affiliation with InstaMapper or any other iPhone programming team. But I am a programmer myself and have read practically all the iPhone developer documentation. It's general knowledge that iPhone applications CANNOT run in the background, NONE of them except those released by apple themselves. Apple is developing a program (For any apps such as AIM, etc that NEED background notification, but this will use apples servers, and the servers will notify the phone of updates, etc. So as far as I know, even this won't really help with InstaMapper. This is supposedly going to arrive in September.)
Hope this helps!

Re: iPhone 3G Application - Switching Tracking Off
BUT... Loopt runs in the background! Is that because they made a special arrangement with Apple?
FYI: I LOVE InstaMapper - especially that GPS coordinates are given, plus an ability to export data. It works great, until you have to take a phone call, or use Google maps to see where you're headed, then I fall off the InstaMapper because the application is shut off...
I'm hopping that InstaMapper will become the next loopt - Thanks.

Re: iPhone 3G Application - Switching Tracking Off
So does it run when the phone turns off on its own? ie I have the application running, then the iphone hits the sleep timer and the screen goes off, is it still running then or
it runs only when
1) screen is one
2) instamapper is the foreground application
?

Re: iPhone 3G Application - Switching Tracking Off
only when the screen is on.
btw, we disable the sleep timer. the device only goes to sleep when the battery level drops to below 20%.
if you are a former beta tester and your iphone goes to sleep regularly, download the stable version from the app store.

Re: iPhone 3G Application - Switching Tracking Off
So, does the app gets shut down when the phone's screen switches off after say 1 minute? Or does the app still run, but just the screen is blank?

I don't think Loopt runs in the background either. If I do not have the app on-screen, my position is not updated until I tap on the icon and run the app and not until it starts "locating". I don't mind that they don't run in the background because they really drain the battery fast.

Re: iPhone 3G Application - Switching Tracking Off
Is this app available for Jailbroken iPhones? Using Cydia? That way we could use it even in the background.
IMHO, Apple totally dropped the ball by tying developers hands like this. It is still more useful to jailbreak the iPhone precisely because of its strange, overprotective attitude.

I stand corrected... Loopt does NOT run in the background on iPhones... Loopt advertises otherwise, then they minimally clearify that only crackberries get that feature, iPhone users have to CONSTANTLY launch loopt to note their locatation... So, yeah, you'll walk right by an iPhone user . I WAS going to get iPhones for the whole family... Now, we'll wait.

Terrific! You made an application that "just works" like it should!
Thanks!
